Aerials Australia is proud to supply aerial hammocks to special needs children and adults around Australia, working in partnership with Australia’s NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) to receive funding.

Hammocks and Autism – What makes a hammock a perfect addition?

Aerial hammocks a great way to feel secure and in control of the senses. Much like a blanket, aerial hammocks can provide a security and warmth. Being cuddled up into a cocoon provides a safe place with complete control over how much sensory input is wanted. Our fabric is a soft, gentle tricot and moulds around the body perfectly, eliminating exterior stimuli.

How does it work? One big reason hammocks are so fabulous is strenthening vestibular and proprioceptive input. Swinging motions activate the fluid in the inner ear, which activates vestibular sensory receptors. Through the process, you would feel swinging, maybe butterflies in your tummy, wind in your hair, which allows the brain to start understanding isolated feelings as there is no other pressure on the body or stimuli. Many with autism find it difficult to process balance and coordination, such as knowing how far to jump, or where to step. A hammock takes away the fear or uncertainty and allows confidence even though the feet are off the ground as the hammock produces secure pressure evenly on the body.

Strengthening the proprioceptive system is also important, as it provides a better understanding of spacial awareness, and helps with the ‘fight or flight’ impulse as the body is cuddled and cocooned and gives the sense of security and safety. This can help in a multitude of ways, from calming emotions, to concentration in homework, to discussions and focus.

And on-top of that, hammocks are a great way to increase muscle abilities in many ways! Head, neck and core muscles can greatly improve for example by facing downwards, or rolled up as a single swing can benefit core. The options are endless, and your hammock can grow with you through life.
In summary, aerial hammocks are an excellent addition to both sensory seekers and avoiders and can be used in individual ways to suit each person.

As always, it’s best to speak to your doctor or OT first if a hammock will suit. If you think a hammock could benefit you, your child or someone you know, feel free to send us an email and we can take you through the process for funding.
